This Gnostic group was insistent on the highest possible ethical standard. The Valentinian Gnostics believed that once an individual learned the knowledge of God’s will, it became possible to live a perfect, sinless life. Those that were ignorant were sinners.
The Valentinians also reject wealth and temporal authority. However, this group of Gnostics believed in marriage and producing offspring. To the Valentinian Gnostic, the only means by which to pass the seed of gnosis was to produce a child. Thus, the lineage of esoteric teaching would continue passing for eternity, from one generation to the next. While there were plenty of Valentinians that believed in passing their spiritual seed along to their children, there were some that chose to remain celibate as the ultimate expression of faith and devotion to gnosis. |
